How to Check Whether an FSSAI Licence Number Is Valid

Verify an FSSAI number through the official system and compare the returned business details with the actual supplier or premises. A plausible-looking number printed on a pack is not enough: entity, address, status and scope must fit the transaction.

Open FoSCoS and use the current public verification or business-search facility. Enter the number carefully, without confusing an application reference with the issued authorisation number. Save the result and date for supplier-review records. Official FoSCoS portal.

Compare the identity and location

Check the name and address against the pack, invoice and supplier documents. Differences can reflect separate brand-owner and manufacturing entities, but the explanation should be coherent. An unrelated certificate cannot validate a food business simply because its status is active.

Assess status and scope

Review the available authorisation status and relevant business or product details. If scope information is insufficient, obtain the current certificate and supporting product evidence from the supplier. A verification result does not establish the safety of a particular batch or approve a marketing claim.

Interpret dates under the current framework

The 2026 perpetual-validity change means an old expiry-only checklist can be misleading. Review the actual certificate and account status, including legacy-transition questions. Suspension and cancellation still matter even where an ordinary future expiry date is absent. Understand current validity.

Investigate discrepancies systematically

Ask the supplier for an explanation and the current issued record. Preserve pack photographs, invoice details and the verification result. If the record cannot be reconciled, use official support or the relevant authority channel. Do not accuse a business of fraud solely because one search attempt fails or a portal is temporarily unavailable.

A worked example

Hypothetical example

A retailer finds that a pack’s brand-owner number corresponds to the marketing company, while a second number identifies the factory. It compares both declarations with the supplier file instead of expecting one entity to perform every role. An unrelated number would remain an unresolved discrepancy.

Your practical checklist

  • Use the official verification facility.
  • Enter the issued number accurately.
  • Compare entity and premises details.
  • Check current status and relevant scope.
  • Interpret legacy dates carefully.
  • Record and investigate discrepancies.
