Legal Metrology on Food Packs: Net Quantity, MRP and Consumer Care

For retail food packs, review Legal Metrology declarations alongside FSSAI information. Net quantity, MRP inclusive of taxes, consumer-care details and applicable unit sale price are distinct tasks. Accurate nutrition and ingredients do not make the commercial declarations complete.

Establish the package and sale type

Identify the actual prepacked commodity, retail unit, multipack, wholesale or institutional arrangement and applicable exemptions. A large carton is not automatically exempt, and a business-to-business invoice does not alone establish institutional-consumer treatment.

Check the commercial declaration set

The Department of Consumer Affairs overview identifies relevant manufacturer/packer/importer information, common or generic name, net quantity, date-related information, MRP including taxes, consumer-care details and unit sale price. Apply the actual rules to the product and pack. Official declaration overview.

Control quantity and price calculations

Use the appropriate standard units and distinguish net food quantity from packaging weight. Match the declaration to filling and quantity-control records. Where unit sale price applies, calculate it on the prescribed basis and reconcile it with the displayed MRP and quantity; do not create a decorative comparison price.

Read current amendments before approving wording

The official rules directory includes several 2026 amendments. Older compilations remain useful for structure but should not be treated as the complete current law. Check the relevant amendment, effective date and commodity scope rather than assuming every change applies to every food. Current rules and amendments.

Review the physical and online presentation

Check legibility, location and accurate consumer-care channels. Review online declaration duties for the sale model. MRP alterations or stickers require their own rule and direction assessment; a tax change does not give an unlimited right to rewrite prices. Coordinate the review with FSSAI date and business declarations.

A worked example

Hypothetical example

A brand launches a 200 g pack using the MRP and unit-price artwork from its 250 g version. The team recalculates the applicable price presentation and checks net-quantity controls. The product formula is unchanged, but the commercial declaration file must still be updated.

  • Check applicable declarations and exemptions.
  • Verify net quantity and standard units.
