Fortified Foods and the +F Logo

The +F logo relates to foods meeting the applicable fortification framework and product endorsement requirements. Adding a vitamin does not automatically make a product eligible for the mark. Check the food, prescribed nutrients, levels, evidence and current FoSCoS requirements.

Identify the applicable fortification standard

The framework covers specified staples and relevant fortified processed foods. Establish which provision fits the actual product. Milk, edible oil, rice, wheat flour and salt have distinct requirements; do not use a generic nutrient blend as evidence that all categories meet the same standard. Read fortification regulations.

Control nutrient sources and levels

Review the required nutrient forms, permitted levels and product specifications. Calculate actual nutrient contribution and consider process loss and storage stability. A premix invoice does not establish the finished product’s compliance throughout its stated life.

Review the endorsement route

FSSAI’s FoSCoS direction describes endorsement of fortified products in the licence. Complete the applicable product and account steps before using the mark. A general FSSAI licence alone should not be presented as proof of +F eligibility. Read the endorsement direction.

Check label and claim conditions

Use the prescribed mark and any required accompanying declarations appropriately. Separate the fortification identity from claims about disease or broad superiority. A fortified food’s nutritional statement still needs a claim-specific and evidence assessment. Read nutrition claims.

Maintain quality and traceability

Retain premix specifications, supplier approvals, production calculations, testing and distribution records. Reassess source or dosage changes and link the finished batch to the relevant premix. If the formulation no longer meets the endorsed framework, resolve the position before reusing the old artwork.

A worked example

Hypothetical example

A flour producer adds a multivitamin premix and asks to print +F immediately. It first maps the applicable flour standard, prescribed nutrient combination, levels and endorsement evidence. The review identifies that adding some nutrients is not the same as meeting the complete fortification framework.

Your practical checklist

  • Identify the applicable food and standard.
  • Review required nutrient forms and levels.
  • Verify finished-product and stability evidence.
  • Complete applicable product endorsement.
  • Use prescribed mark and declarations.
  • Control premix and batch records.
